Lymphedema Services
Lymphedema is a chronic disease that results in a build up of lymph fluid (swelling) that occurs when the lymphatic system is either faulty or damaged. When cancer surgery involves the lymph nodes, therapy of the lymphatic system may be necessary. Dr. Becca Parker-Bell is the physical therapist and founder of Therapy Specialists of Murray. She graduated from the University of Evansville Doctor of Physical Therapy program after earning her Bachelors in Exercise Science from Murray State University. Following her graduation from physical therapy school, she worked full-time in long-term care. She had an interest in lymphedema and wound care and earned her Certified Lymphedema and Wound Therapist (CLWT) credentials. She also is certified in dry needling and oncology rehabilitation.
Murray Calloway County Hospital offers lymphedema therapy at their Center for Rehab and Sports Medicine. Samantha Burnett, certified in Lymphedema Therapy, treats and manages lymphedema affecting different parts of the body, as well as other related conditions. The most common cause of lymphedema in America is breast cancer-related surgery involving the removal of lymph nodes. It results from a mechanical insufficiency of your lymphatic system, which is part of your immune system. The insufficiency prevents lymph fluid from draining well, and the fluid buildup leads to swelling. While there is presently no cure for lymphedema, it can be managed with early diagnosis and Complete Decongestive Therapy of the affected limb.
Baptist Health Paducah is another regional location where Lymphedema Therapy is offered. Services performed are: Evaluation, Exercises, Bandage Wraps, Massage, Pneumatic Compression, and Compression Garments.
