The Importance of Early Screening: Stephanie Balmer's Journey with Colon Cancer

Stephanie Balmer's personal account sheds light on the critical significance of early screening for colon cancer. At the age of 50, she navigated the decision-making process between a colonoscopy and a cologuard test. Her doctor told her that a cologuard test would be appropriate due to the absence of family history. Not wanting to go through the dreaded prep and embarrassment of a colonoscopy, Stephanie breathed a sigh of relief and opted for cologuard testing. Stephanie received a negative result, providing a false sense of security. Unfortunately, a few months later, alarming symptoms including bleeding emerged, leading her to push for a colonoscopy. The subsequent diagnosis of cancer highlighted the limitations of the cologuard test and the imperative need for more reliable screening methods.
